本次專案Group.G受到策展人王奕盛的委託,為科文双融主辦的《RE:江賢二數位冥想.江賢二光影沈浸展》製作一段沈浸式投影動畫。我們利用AI生成的抽象效果來設計沈浸式體驗空間,重新演繹與詮釋江賢二於「巴黎聖母院」系列中的創作心境。

The project was commissioned to Group.G by curator Ethan Wang, to produce an immersive projection animation for the “RE: Paul Chiang - Meditating Algorithm: Immersive in the life and the works of Paul Chiang” organized by CT Ambi. We utilized AIGC to design an immersive experiential space, reinterpreting and interpreting Paul Chiang’s creative state in the "Notre-Dame de Paris" series.

1982年江賢二在巴黎創作出當時自己最滿意的「巴黎聖母院」系列作品,並說:「一直到畫出這個系列作品,我才覺得藝術是我可以走的一條路,這輩子有資格當畫家。」
「微塵」靈感取材自江賢二1982至2000年間的畫作,並以早期代表作巴黎聖母院系列畫作為核心,保持系列畫作沉鬱神秘的調性,以及富含觸感的單色畫面基地,調配感性的抽象筆觸與象徵符號,演繹江賢二旅居巴黎、尋找精神性心靈啟發的感受。

Dust of Subtlety: Respect and Redesign
In 1982, Paul Chiang created his most satisfying "Notre-Dame de Paris" series in Paris and remarked, "It wasn't until I painted this series that I felt art was a path I could pursue, and that I had the qualification to be a painter in this lifetime."
"Dust of Subtlety" draws inspiration from the artworks of Paul Chiang between 1982 and 2000, with a focus on his early masterpiece series, the Notre-Dame de Paris series. The series maintains the melancholic and mysterious tone, along with a monochromatic visual base rich in texture. It blends expressive abstract strokes with symbolic elements, interpreting Paul Chiang's experiences of living in Paris and the search for spiritual inspiration.

Breaking down Paul Chiang's works, we discovered that in the "Notre-Dame de Paris" series, the artist's paintings exhibit extreme abstraction, making it challenging to accurately convey his narrative style through traditional methods such as 2D, 3D, stop motion, or live-action. To interpret abstract paintings and emotions, we used AIGC-generated paintings, continuously extending and stacking them, presenting Paul Chiang’s unique visual characteristics, allowing black and white to blend together, creating a sense of transparency that carries both air and sanctity.

Story
對比繁榮的巴黎聖母院,江賢二在其作品中追求呈現一種「精神上虔誠的空氣」,超越嘈雜的現實。最初,我們以此核心構思一場心靈洗滌之旅。在光明與黑暗相互對應的情境中,我們在一座光明純淨的教堂中演繹了「七宗罪」的意象。孤獨憂鬱的信徒來到聖母院祈禱,透過信仰的滋養,淨化心靈,實現靈魂超脫於宇宙。

In contrast to the bustling Notre-Dame de Paris, Paul Chiang, in his works, seeks to convey a "spiritually devout atmosphere," transcending the chaotic reality. Initially, we conceived of a spiritual journey based on this core idea. In a context where light and shadow correspond to each other, we depicted the imagery of the "Seven Deadly Sins" in a bright and pure church. Lonely and melancholic believers come to the cathedral to pray, seeking to purify their souls through the nourishment of faith, and to achieve spiritual transcendence beyond the universe.
然而,為了貼近江賢二在巴黎的原始意念,我們減少宗教聖像,融入巴黎街頭風格。「巴黎聖母院」系列畫作中雖呈現黑暗氛圍,卻展現內部豐富層次和透明堆疊肌理,受到江賢二在巴黎的靈感啟示影響。影片以街頭為起點,引領觀眾欣賞聖母院特色,仿佛心靈洗滌。畫面轉向宇宙,觀眾超越世俗,與宇宙合而為一,完成江賢二畫作。AIGC生成的畫作延展堆疊,深刻傳達畫家在巴黎的特殊旅程和蛻變。

However, to stay true to Paul Chiang’s original vision during his time in Paris, we have minimized religious icons and integrated the style of Parisian streets. The “Notre-Dame de Paris” series, while depicting a dark atmosphere, showcases rich internal layers and a transparent stacking texture, influenced by Paul Chiang’s inspiration in Paris. The video begins on the streets, leading viewers to appreciate the unique features of Notre-Dame, offering a spiritual cleanse. As the scene transitions to the cosmos, viewers are lifted beyond the mundane to merge with the universe, completing Paul Chiang’s paintings. AIGC-generated artworks extend and stack, deeply conveying the artist’s special journey and transformation in Paris.

透過AIGC 生成動態圖像,我們嘗試捕捉江賢二的創作精神和獨特手法。我們利用AI畫面擴展調整尺寸比例,以客製化方式呈現最適合展演空間的畫面,同時,運用了AI高解析放大,透過Topaz Gigapixel AI提升畫作和動態影像的品質,以滿足沈浸式展演空間的畫質需求。在動畫製作方面,我們採用了Stable Diffuson、Deforum、Control Net等技術,結合音樂節奏,打造出一系列由畫作延伸出的令人驚豔的影像動態。

Through the latest AIGC dynamic image generation technology in Stable Diffusion, we attempt to capture the creative spirit and unique techniques of Paul Chiang. We employ AI high-resolution upscaling, enhancing the quality of both artworks and dynamic images using Topaz Gigapixel AI to meet the visual quality demands of immersive exhibition spaces. Simultaneously, we use AI image expansion to adjust size proportions, customizing the presentation for the exhibition space. In terms of animation production, we utilize technologies such as Stable Diffusion, Deforum, Control Net, combined with musical rhythms, to create a series of stunning visual dynamics extending from the artworks.

展場位於双融域,擁有約119坪的五面投影空間。在這次的專案中,我們不僅要傳達江賢二在「巴黎聖母院」系列品畫面中故事,還需注重整體的沈浸感和大空間的解析度。如何在滿足這些條件的同時,以重新詮釋江賢二從紐約重回巴黎創作時,在黑沉沉的畫面,以白色線條勾勒出幾道純白色神聖的光的心境。將靜態畫作以動態方式重新呈現,成為挑戰的重心,以呈現出作品獨有的情感。

The exhibition is located in AMBI SPACE ONE, featuring approximately 119 ping (about 393 square meters) of projection space across five surfaces. In this project, our goal is not only to convey the stories depicted in Paul Chiang’s “Notre Dame de Paris” series but also to focus on the overall immersive experience and the resolution of the large space. A key challenge is how to reinterpret Paul Chiang’s return to Paris from New York for his creation, sketching sacred beams of pure white light with white lines against the dark backdrop, while meeting these conditions. Transforming static paintings into dynamic presentations becomes the focal point of the challenge, aiming to capture the unique emotions of the artwork.
